“Wanted for War Crimes”

The Programme

SF: Operations and Finance Manager

The Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA) is an international human rights organization dedicated to ending torture and other severe human rights abuses around the world and advancing the rights of survivors to seek truth, justice and redress. CJA uses litigation to hold perpetrators individually accountable for human rights abuses, develop human rights law, and advance the rule of law in countries transitioning from periods of abuse.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Manager of Operations and Finance (OFM) has primary responsibility for managing the finance, human resources, office management, facilities management and information technology functions of the office. Because this individual balances a variety of responsibilities, the position requires a high degree of flexibility, a professional attitude, significant initiative and attention to detail. An understanding of accounting principles in a non-profit environment, computer literacy and a commitment to human rights are also required. DC - Senior Counsel for HRW

The Senior Counsel with HRW's Terrorism and Counterterrorism Program will have principal responsibility for investigating and analyzing U.S. counterterrorism policies and practices, developing HRW's response to them, and communicating HRW's policy recommendations to officials in the executive and legislative branches of the US government. The Senior Counsel will draft legal and advocacy documents targeted at government officials, the press, and the general public. S/he will also undertake research and prepare reports documenting U.S. counterterrorism practices. S/he will lead advocacy efforts relating to U.S. counterterrorism policies and practices with U.S. officials in Washington, DC, including by engaging new constituencies and building new alliances. The Center for Constitutional Rights, a public interest litigation and education organization, is seeking a legal worker to join the Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative team.

The Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative at CCR resulted from the Supreme Court victory in Rasul v. Bush in June of 2004 which asserted the right of Guantánamo detainees to challenge their detention. Since then, CCR has recruited and trained hundreds of attorneys from across the country and secured habeas representation in federal court for the vast majority of the men imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay. CCR has been a leader in both coordinating this effort and in implementing the litigation, international advocacy and public education strategies for this human rights movement.

SF - AI Field Organizer, Western Region


Amnesty International (AI) is a movement of globally-minded people across the world speaking out and acting up in defense of human rights. We investigate and report on human rights violations, and we educate and mobilize the public until we make a difference.

Founded in 1965, Amnesty International of the USA (AIUSA) is the largest Amnesty section, with 360,000 members, almost half a million on-line activists, and more than a thousand community and student activist groups.

AIUSA Field Organizers (FO) report to one of five Regional Directors, and are assigned territories within which they are responsible for organizing and coordinating the work of AIUSA members and activists, consistent with Amnesty International’s approach to human rights work. FOs support local member groups within their territory with recruiting and engagement events, human rights education and activist training. We currently seek a Field Organizer for the Western Region, located in our San Francisco office.

DC: Moot Court Competition Coordinator


The Academy is seeking a Program Coordinator for the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The Competition is the only trilingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese) moot court competition dedicated to the Inter-American human rights legal system in the world. It brings together over 350 students and faculty, and over 200 practicing attorneys, as well as key members of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, as well as the diplomatic corps, to train law students on how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system as a legitimate forum for redressing human rights violations. The Program Coordinator will work with universities throughout the Americas and beyond, including coordination of agreements, and will have extensive contact with law students and lawyers from the region.

The Project Coordinator is responsible for the general implementation of a joint REDRESS FIDH project on universal jurisdiction funded by the European Union. The purpose of the project is to:

• Enhance cooperation among Member States in the investigation and prosecution of
perpetrators located in the EU.
• Develop among practitioners regular exchanges of views on common problems faced in
their countries in the investigation and prosecution of genocide, crimes against

Legal Assistance Center Coordinator, Thailand

The Legal Assistance Center (LAC) Coordinator leads an innovative and comprehensive access to justice and rule of law program in refugee camps on the Thai/ Burma border. The Coordinator oversees all project activities designed to improve access to justice and effective protection for refugees in camps by: helping refugees access legal information and appropriate remedies for crime and rights violations in the Thai or camp justice systems; supporting the refugee leadership to administer justice more equitably within the camps; engaging Thai authorities and civil society on refugee justice and rights; and pursuing research, monitoring, and advocacy on refugee rights issues. NY/Cape Town: Health and Human Rights Program Officer - Africa

IGLHRC is seeking a skilled and committed individual for a grant-funded position based in either New York or Cape Town. The International Uyghur Human Rights and Democracy Foundation, a Washington, D.C.-based human rights organization that promotes human rights and democracy for the Uyghur people, especially for Uyghur women and children, is seeking an experienced, well-organized self-starter to fill its Researcher/Project Officer position. HRW Researcher on the Horn of Africa/Kenya

Under the guidance of the Team Leader for the Horn of Africa/Kenya, the Researcher will support the work of HRW staff in implementing a human rights research and advocacy agenda focusing on the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia) and Kenya.

IHRC is looking to commission a researcher to work on its forthcoming report on Germany, civil society and citizenship. The researcher should be available to start at short notice. This position is not office based and the work can be done remotely.

The role requires fluency in written and spoken German and English, and requires the ability to research and review existing literature in the field of citizenship. Applicants should have an educational background in the social sciences. The commission fee is UK£750. The final write up should be in both German and English, all working drafts should be in English.

DC - Genocide Intervention Network Analyst

Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET) is changing the way the United States and the international community respond to the world's worst crimes by empowering individuals, communities and other stakeholders with the tools to prevent and stop genocide.

GI-NET seeks to fill an Analyst position in its Conflict Risk Network (CRN) program. CRN coordinates a network of institutional investors, financial service providers and related stakeholders interested in addressing the role corporate actors (i.e. the companies they are invested in) play in areas affected by genocide and severe conflict. With this network behind it, CRN is leveraging the collective weight of billions in assets to push for responsible action by companies materially involved in certain GI-NET Areas of Concern. CRN’s work currently focuses on Sudan, but it is expanding to address an additional conflict-affected area in 2010. CRN’s work focuses on three core areas:

NY: CICC: French Information Intern


The CICC is looking for one on-site French Information Intern to assist the French Information Services Coordinator with various translation needs, including background and information papers, CICC fact sheets, articles for the CICC African newsletter and other translations as needed. The French Information Intern will also assist with the development of the CICC French website and some media-related work, such as developing our database of Francophone journalists for our Universal Ratification Campaign. HRW: German Director, Advocacy and Communications Departments

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Germany Director.

The Germany Director will be the public face of HRW in Germany and act as the organization's central link to the German media, government and public. The Germany Director will design and implement strategies to influence German policy and public opinion relating to human rights concerns globally. The Director will be expected to promote HRW's priority concerns with key members of the media, policy-makers, and the NGO community, to testify in Bundestag hearings, to seek out opportunities to write opinion articles for the press, to speak on television and radio as well as at public events and seminars, and to work closely with volunteers associated with HRW to involve them in advocacy relating to HRW's work. The Germany Director will supervise HRW's development and outreach work in Germany, and will be responsible for regularly briefing HRW's Germany committees and selected supporters, speaking at major events, engaging with the leadership of HRW's Germany committees, and outreach to prospective donors. The Germany Director also coordinates closely with the organization's Brussels office and EU Advocacy Director on matters relating to the European Union.

DC - HRW US Advocacy Director


Working with the staff of HRW's US Program, the Advocacy Director will help to conceptualize and implement strategies for transforming HRW's research and reports into improvements in US policy and practice. The Advocacy Director meets regularly with US government officials, including executive branch officials, legislators and their staff members; prepares a range of written materials, including policy analyses and advocacy documents targeting officials and the public; seeks to influence policy debates by writing press releases, op-eds, and blog postings; works with other advocacy organizations including through coalitions; and develops contacts with journalists in a variety of media. S/he is responsible for keeping abreast of pertinent developments in Washington, DC and selected state capitals. In addition, the Advocacy Director is a key organizational spokesperson, among those who represent the US Program before the media, government officials, and the public.

The Regional Director for the MidWestern Region is a member of AIUSA's Leadership Team, reporting to the Deputy Executive Director for Organizing, Membership & Campaigns. Based in Chicago, the Regional Director is Amnesty's spokesperson to the membership and to the public in thirteen MidWestern states.
