London: NCADC Annual General Meeting

Invitation to NCADC Annual General Meeting

12.00 noon - 5.00pm
Saturday 10th June 2006
All Souls Clubhouse
141 Cleveland Street
London
W1T 6QG

Facing Deportation: No one can fight against it alone
NCADC has been supporting individuals, families and communities to campaign against deportation for 11 years - the past year has been a hard one for all those facing deportation and those campaigning to stop deportations. However there has been lots of magnificent resistance and many victories, so the Home Office has not had it all there own way.

NCADC's AGM will bring together from around the UK people facing deportation their families/friends and groups that are resisting removals from the UK.
NCADC is still in the middle of a funding crisis with no light at the end of the tunnel. As you know, we have been reduced from four offices to two. Calls from across the UK are being handled by the two remaining staff in Manchester and Birmingham.

We would first all like to thank all those who have made a donation or taken out a standing order, some of you have done both. This has allowed NCADC to keep the two remaining staff in post since March and for several months to come, but we are just using up money that is not being replaced. We have not been able to obtain on-going core funding and it is proving exceedingly hard to do so. If you have not yet made a donation or taken out a standing order (docs attached), here is another chance to do so.

Lunch will be provided for all participants, and there will be a crčche.

Travel costs for those facing deportation is reimbursed by NCADC for cheapest advanced bookings on National Express coaches. Please note that NCADC cannot reimburse for more expensive forms of travel - e.g. more expensive tickets bought on the day of travel.

Due to our present financial restraints if you need help with purchasing tickets you must contact your nearest coordinator not later than Friday the 12th May. NCADC will purchase tickets and post them to you, however we will not be able to alter tickets once posted.

The California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice will hold the first of three public hearings on the death penalty on January 10th in Sacramento, CA. The hearings will draw input from experts and members of the public in an unprecedented effort to address serious flaws in California's death penalty system.

At the upcoming hearings, experts in the field will present research and testimony on racial and geographic disparities in death sentencing, costs, problems with juries and other important topics. The Commission will also hear from the public and listen to the experiences of victims' families and others affected by the death penalty system.

International Access to Information and Transparency Calendar of Events

In furtherance of the Atlanta Declaration and Action Plan for the Advancement of the Right of Access to Information and its call for the access to information community “to build solidarity with a full range of stakeholders who share a common transparency agenda,” the Carter Center’s Access to Information Project has launched a calendar of events, including conferences, workshops, summits, retreats, and training sessions from all over the world pertaining to access to information (ATI) and transparency. The goal of this calendar is to enhance cooperation and coordination, benefit from the important work already being done in the field through sharing of materials and methodologies, and allow organizations to better promote and share their work. The International Access to Information and Transparency Calendar of Events will be hosted on our website at

www.cartercenter.org/accesstoinformation.html.

The calendar will compile relevant events from all stakeholder groups on issues related to ATI and transparency. It is our hope that this website will not only list the events, but also include links to materials, agendas, and final reports from upcoming and recent events.

In order to keep the calendar as current and comprehensive as possible, we will need your support. Please send us information on any events that you are planning, at least 20 days in advance of the activity, as well as permission to link to your website.

If you have any specific questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at lneuman@emory.edu.
