SF - Exile: 30 Years Later

CJA is co-sponsoring Exile: 30 Years Later - a series of cultural events which will be held in the Bay Area from September 27-30 to commemorate the arrival of Chilean political refugees in Northern California after the 1973 coup d'état led by General Augusto Pinochet.

The three days of events will include an exhibition of Chilean youth art, a photo exhibition depicting the beginnings of the Northern California Chilean community with video and slide presentations by Chilean political refugees, and a concert featuring Chilean ensembles Venceremos, Kamanchaka and Raiz. Further information in English and Spanish can be found at: http://www.chileref30.org/Index2.html.

CJA is deeply honored to be a part of this commemoration. CJA has worked closely with the local Chilean human rights community in their efforts to achieve justice since our founding almost ten years ago. After Pinochet's arrest in London in 1998, CJA helped to coordinate Chileans in the U.S. to provide direct testimony on human rights abuses that they suffered to prosecutors in Spain and Chile. We also brought the successful and precedent setting case against "Caravan of Death" member Armando Fernandez Larios for his role in the torture and murder of Chilean economist Winston Cabello.

We encourage all CJA supporters in the Bay Area to attend Exile: 30 Years Later!

Italy: Human Rights Nights

We are pleased to present the 8th edition of Human Rights Nights - a festival of cinema and arts dedicated to human rights - taking place in Bologna and Forlì from 12 to 20 April 2008.

This year's theme is Resistance, and will feature films, conferences, art exhibits, performances and music. We dedicate this years festival to Resistance as an homage to everyone who struggles to survive in situations of war, colonialism, slavery, poverty and in everyday life difficulties and alienations in contemporary society. We will focus on the strength of the people involved in Resistence movements, who are empowered by their acts of defiance and human dignity. It is thus a positive perspective on those who at times are viewed instead simply as victims. Human Rights Nights celebrates warriors of peace and justice.
