The 2006 Barbara Chester Award

The award includes a $10,000. cash prize (U.S.) and a handcrafted Hopi
Indian silver eagle feather sculpture symbolizing healing and freedom
from fear of intimidation from any source.

Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award 2006

Greetings !

The Gwangju Prize for Human Rights was established to celebrate the spirit of May 18 Gwangju Uprising by recognizing individuals, groups or institutions in Korea and abroad that have contributed in promoting and advancing human rights, democracy and peace in their work.

The prize is awarded by the citizens of Gwangju in the spirit of solidarity and gratitude from those whom they have received help in their struggle for democratization. It is hoped that through this award the spirit and message of May 18 will be immortalized in the hearts and mind of humankind.

A prize money amounting to US$ 50,000, a gold medal and a certificate is awarded to a winner. The deadline for nomination is on 30 March 2006.

Note: The May 18 Memorial Foundation is preparing for the celebration and commemoration of the Gwangju Democractic Uprising of 1980. Different events and celebrations are slated for this year. Please visit the English section of our website at 518.org for more information.

John Humphrey Freedom Award

Rights & Democracy is currently accepting nominations for the John Humphrey
Freedom Award, which is presented every year to an organization or person
who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of human rights
and democratic development. The award consists of a grant of $25,000 as
well as a speaking tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of
the recipient's human rights work. The deadline for nominations is April

UNESCO Prize for Human Rights Education

In May 2006, the UNESCO Sector for Social and Human Sciences is calling for nominations for the UNESCO Prize for Human Rights Education. The name of the 15th laureate of the Prize will be announced on 10 December 2006, on the occasion of Human Rights Day.

The Prize, amounting to US$10,000, was created in 1978 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to encourage organizations and individuals that have made an exemplary contribution to the advancement of knowledge on human rights. The prizewinner will also receive a diploma and trophy – a bronze sculpture, created for UNESCO by the Japanese artist Toshimi Ishii, known as “Toshi”.

Member States and Associate Members of UNESCO, intergovernmental organizations and international non-governmental organizations maintaining official relations with UNESCO are invited to submit nominations of an individual or an organization whose activities merit this distinction.

National or international institutions that provide education and training in human rights and are active in building a universal culture of human rights are invited to submit nominations through the National Commissions for UNESCO of the country where those human rights institutions have their headquarters.

Lorenzo Natali Prize 2006 for jounalism

15th edition of the Lorenzo Natali Prize organised by the European Commission is launched!

The Lorenzo Natali Prize 2006 is open to print and on-line journalists employed by the local media in following five regions: Europe / Africa / Arab World /Iran /Israel / Asia and Pacific / Latin America and Caribbean.

Eligible journalists should have written reports which focus on human rights or democracy in the developing world.

Each applicant is allowed to submit ONE article published between 1st September 2005 and 31st December 2006.

All prize nominees will be special guests of the European Commission in Brussels. Each prize winner will receive a Trophy and a financial award. A total of 50.000E prize money is awarded to the best articles.

To enter, you only need to fill in the application form online before 31 January 2007 at www.nataliprize.eu and submit it along with an electronic version of your article.

Nominations for Human Rights Award

Rights & Democracy is currently accepting nominations for the John Humphrey Freedom Award. The award consists of a grant of $25,000 as well as a speaking tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of the recipient's human rights work.
Previous winners have included, Su Su Nway from Burma (2006), Yan Christian Warinussy from West Papua (2005), Godeliève Mukasarasi from Rwanda (2004), and Dr. Sima Samar from Afghanistan (2001).

Join CJA at the Dodd Human Rights Prize Ceremony on Oct. 1

As we announced earlier this summer, CJA and Mental Disabilities Rights International are the winners of the 2007 Thomas J. Dodd Prize in International Justice and Human Rights. We invite all of you to join us as we proudly accept the Dodd Prize, which will be awarded on Monday, October 1, 2007. The ceremony will take place at 11:00am at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center Plaza, University of Connecticut, in Storrs, Connecticut.

Accepting Nominations for the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights 2008

Now, on its 8th year, the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights is now open for nomination. Since its inception, this prestigious award has been given to 9 individuals and a Korean organization. In 2006 and 2007 saw co-winners receiving the award. Among the winners include Xanana Gusmao (Timor Leste), Daw Aung San Suu Kyii ( Burma), Wardah Hafidz ( Indonesia), Malalai Joya (Afghanistan ) and Irom Sharmila (India).

For 2008, the prize at stake is US$ 50,000.00 , a gold medal and a certificate. The winner will be invited to grace the 2008 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award Night on 18 May 2008 , in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. This yearly award is sponsored by the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
