Deadline Extended – April 30, 2009 – Call for Nominations – 2009 John Humphrey Award

Rights & Democracy is currently accepting nominations for the John Humphrey Freedom Award, which is presented every year to an organization or person who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of human rights and democratic development. The award consists of a grant of $30,000 as well as a speaking tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of the recipient's human rights work. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2009. Call for Nominations: Human Rights Defenders Tulip Award 2010

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Human Rights Defenders Tulip award. Established in 2008, the Human Rights Defenders Tulip is an initiative of the Dutch government. It is an award whose purpose is to recognize individuals who have shown exceptional moral courage in protecting and promoting the rights of their fellow human beings. The winner receives an individual cash award of EUR 10,000 and the opportunity to submit a project proposal to intensify his or her human rights work up to a value of EUR 100,000. In addition, the winner is given the opportunity to meet with relevant stakeholders in Europe. Deadline for nominations: June 15, 2010.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS : THE 2011 MARTIN ENNALS AWARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS (MEA)

The Martin Ennals Foundation invites nominations for its 2011 Award. The deadline is 9th December 2010. The MEA application form and more information on the Award can be obtained from the MEA website: www.martinennalsaward.org, ready for electronic submission

The Award is granted annually to an individual, or exceptionally an organisation, in recognition of their commitment and ongoing endeavour in the defence and promotion of human rights. Nominees must be currently involved in work for the promotion and protection of human rights. Special account is taken of those who are at risk and have demonstrated an active record of combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means. The MEA aims to encourage individuals or organisations, particularly those who are working in conditions hostile to fundamental human rights and who are in need of protection.

The present value of the annual Award is 20'000 Swiss Francs, to be used for further work in the field of human rights. The following organisations participate in the Jury: Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Front Line, Human Rights First, International Federation for Human Rights, the World Organisation Against Torture, International Commission of Jurists, International Service for Human Rights, Diakonie Germany and HURIDOCS.

Congo); 1999 Natasha Kandic (Yugoslavia); 1998 Eyad Rajab El Sarraj (Palestine); 1997 Samuel Ruiz García (Mexico); 1996 Clement Nwankwo (Nigeria); 1995 Asma Jahangir (Pakistan); 1994 Harry Wu (China).

Martin Ennals (1927-1991) was instrumental to the modern human rights movement. He creatively pursued ideas ahead of his time and was the driving force behind other organisations. His deep desire was to see more cooperation among NGOs.
