HUMAN RIGHTS IN DIVERSE SOCIETIES
International Forum for Young Leaders
Call for Applications
The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism proudly announces The Global Conference on Human Rights
in Diverse Societies, to be held at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, October 7th to 9th, 2010. This will
be the second Echenberg Family Conference on Human Rights. Following the precedent established by the frst
Conference, a Young Leaders Forum will be organized in conjunction with the event.
The first conference, The Global Conference on the Prevention of Genocide, drew participation from around the
world, successfully drawing attention to a tragically recurring phenomenon and fostering an in-depth understand-
ing of its intricate mechanisms.
This conference, organized in collaboration with the McGill Faculty of Law, will bring together diverse scholars,
judges, politicians, policy makers, journalists, students and members of civil society in an effort to understand
how to establish and evaluate multiculturalism policies that will help diminish sources of cultural confict and
foster increased participation of all members of society at all levels.
To explore the unique contribution that young professionals and scholars can make to the promotion of multi-
culturalism and human rights, both in their own countries and in the international arena, the Centre will host the
second International Forum for Young Leaders, from Monday October 4th to Thursday October 7th. The Forum
will consist of a series of workshops, roundtable discussions, and cultural events aimed at engaging with the spec-
trum of policy issues that ethno-cultural diversity raises.
The Forum provides a unique networking opportunity for like-minded young leaders from around the world, al-
lowing them to engage with each other and to meet with some of the Conference’s distinguished speakers. The
young leaders will engage in scholarly debate on key issues surrounding multiculturalism, including: innovative
legal and institutional responses; diversity, individual rights and minority rights; indigenous peoples as drivers of
multicultural policies; media discourse; education as antidote to hatred; religious diversity; security threats and
identity discourses; and discrimination in the labour market and diversity in the business community.
The McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism will cover all costs, including travel expenses to and
from Montreal, accommodation from Monday October 4th to Saturday October 9th and conference fees.
The Centre encourages those who can contribute to, as well as beneft from, this unique experience to apply. Centre for Human Righs and Legal Pluralism
