DC: Moot Court Competition Coordinator


The Academy is seeking a Program Coordinator for the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The Competition is the only trilingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese) moot court competition dedicated to the Inter-American human rights legal system in the world. It brings together over 350 students and faculty, and over 200 practicing attorneys, as well as key members of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, as well as the diplomatic corps, to train law students on how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system as a legitimate forum for redressing human rights violations. The Program Coordinator will work with universities throughout the Americas and beyond, including coordination of agreements, and will have extensive contact with law students and lawyers from the region.

Candidates for this position must, at minimum, have a Bachelors Degree and two years experience working in human rights and/or law related issues. Graduate degrees are an asset and can be assessed as part of the required experience.

Previous experience organizing large international events is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and/or organize a multi-cultural event is valued, as is previous international working/living experience. Interest in the promotion of creative legal education initiatives is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Latin America would be an asset and the ability to read, write and speak English, and Spanish or Portuguese is essential. Knowledge of all three languages is a plus. Good computer skills (including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access) and office experience are required.

This position requires an independent decision maker who is able to undertake all activities entrusted by the Co-Directors. The successful candidate is a highly motivated and organized person, who prioritizes and works well under pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to juggle a variety of projects and personalities in a large institution. The position relies on the support of interns and volunteers; therefore, previous supervisory experience or volunteer management skills would be helpful. Experience in marketing/outreach and grant proposal writing would be an asset.
