The Advocacy Lab
The adLab Intern will 1) serve as a liaison in maintaining constant communication with one of our participating school chapters as well as ensuring that program operates efficiently and meets the organization's goals; 2) conduct weekly school visits to provide ongoing support to students and faculty sponsors on current campaign issues and projects; 3) receive training on advocacy skills and adLab's target issues; and 4) gain an understanding of the operations of a small start-up non-profit organization. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for hands-on experience working with youth and human rights advocacy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Instill an understanding of basic human rights in high school students as well as introduce concepts of activism, advocacy, and community organizing
-Work with youth to identify human rights issues and employ adLab resources to design and implement advocacy campaigns around a chosen issue
-Ensure timely and coordinated support to adLab programs in participating schools
-Coordinate regular meetings with faculty sponsors, student leaders, and adLab board
-Manage associated administrative duties
Background and Experience
-Current college and graduate students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply
-Must possess a strong interest in advocating for human rights
-Prior experience working with youth in a community-based and/or school setting is preferable
-Background in grassroots campaign organizing is a plus
Knowledge and Skills
-Ability to engage young people and work with diverse populations in group settings
-Must demonstrate confidence, leadership, and excellent group facilitation skills
-Willingness to adapt to new situations and tasks and take initiative where needed
-Ability to troubleshoot and communicate with tact and diplomacy
-Demonstrated organizational skills with great attention to detail
-Ability to multi-task and ensure timely completion of short- and long-term project goals
-Ability to work under pressure and prioritize accordingly
-Ability to work on an individual and team basis
-Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer
Requirements
-Commitment to 5-10 hours/week for the spring semester. Start date is on or around January 12, 2009
-Willingness to travel within the five New York City boroughs
