London: Study Session on HR law

Citizen Rights Lawyering (CRL) welcomes you to its monthly study session on international/domestic human rights law and practice.

The essence of these sessions are to teach and inculcate current but fundamental principles of human rights law.CRL aims to bring bare through these sessions current trends and development within this field.

For the citizenry, you are well informed of your right to enable same to be well defended when encroached. For the student you will learn of current jurisprudential and legal developments on specific areas of the session.

You would have the opportunity of inculcating opinions from seasoned teachers; opinions that will cut your wisdom tooth!For the Human rights worker you will learn of developments which may have effect on your work and importantly where necessary, essential skills.

For the law officer it is an important update on current best practise. As participation is not restricted to any specific region, our sessions are an important tool for networking between practitioners, students and citizens.

The next session will take place in London between 29-30 March, 2009.

On Friday, 16th of January, we will set out together, members, volunteers, and supporters of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, to accompany a convoy of food and medical supplies for the residents of the Gaza Strip.

CFP: "Cultural Genocide"

Call for Papers: Thematic issue of the Journal of Genocide Research (JGR)

When Raphael Lemkin coined the term genocide during World War II, he initially had a broader idea of the concept, namely that a group could be effectively destroyed by an attack on its social institutions and cultural heritage, even without the physical obliteration of its members. Since Lemkin, scholars have defined cultural genocide as a form of persecution involving the deliberate destruction of the culture of a people, ranging from violence against material and immaterial culture to assaults on identities of groups. Such destruction is wrought in a variety of ways, typically including restrictions upon of a group?s language and traditions, the use of boarding schools to forcibly assimilate children, the ruination of objects and institutions, and the persecution of political, cultural, intellectual, and religious elites.

Headquartered in Costa Rica, the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) was established in 1980 as a Treaty Organization by the UN General Assembly. As determined in the Charter of the University and endorsed by the UPEACE Council, the mission of the University for Peace is: “to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.”

ICR: Analyst, Colombia/Andes

The successful candidate will form part of the Colombia/Andes team and produce in-depth reports on conflict, security, transitional justice, governance, drug-trafficking and organised crime issues as well as local and regional politics, analysing long and short-term challenges to conflict prevention and resolution in Colombia and the Andean region, and elaborating innovative and practical policy recommendations to achieve these goals.

NY - ESCR-Net Volunteer Legal Internship - Spring / Summer 2009

The International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net) is seeking volunteer law student interns to assist its small but dynamic team in providing support, information and research to its members. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights established the vision and principles which recognize the interdependence and indivisibility of all human rights. This vision means that people are guaranteed civil and political freedom as well as economic and social well-being. Economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) concern essential values for a life of dignity and freedom - work, health, education, food, housing, and social security amongst others. People throughout the world share the struggle to make these human rights a reality for themselves, their families, communities, and nations.
