Italy: Human Rights Nights

We are pleased to present the 8th edition of Human Rights Nights - a festival of cinema and arts dedicated to human rights - taking place in Bologna and Forlì from 12 to 20 April 2008.

This year's theme is Resistance, and will feature films, conferences, art exhibits, performances and music. We dedicate this years festival to Resistance as an homage to everyone who struggles to survive in situations of war, colonialism, slavery, poverty and in everyday life difficulties and alienations in contemporary society. We will focus on the strength of the people involved in Resistence movements, who are empowered by their acts of defiance and human dignity. It is thus a positive perspective on those who at times are viewed instead simply as victims. Human Rights Nights celebrates warriors of peace and justice.

The film festival will officially open on the 15th of April at Cinema Lumiere with the Opening Film. The prior weekend begining on the 12th of April will introduce the festival with the opening of arts exhibitions, music performances and special events. The festival will close on the 20th with the Award ceremony and concert.

At the core of the festival is the International competition of feature films, documentaries and shorts, judged by two international juries composed of festival directors, film critics, and human rights activists. A series of workshops and conferences will address the theme of Resistance from different perspectives: literature, music, film-making, theatre, etc. The special project for school outreach Youth & Human Rights has continued this year, and also extended to the juvenile and regular detention centres schools.

Human Rights Nights is supported by Cineteca Bologna, the Municipality of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum-Università Bologna, in collaboration with UniboCultura, the Center for Constitutional Studies and Democratic Development and the Polo Scientifico Didattico di Forlì. UTET Editori is the main sponsor of Human Rights Nights.

We hope to see you at this year's Human Rights Nights Film Festival!
