No Peace Without Justice is seeking human rights and other experts to join a
growing team of Kenyan and foreign professionals who are volunteering their
time to document mass violations of human rights and international criminal
law in Kenya.
As you probably know, following the presidential elections last December,
there has been widespread violence in Kenya, after the announcement that
President Kibaki had won the election, despite numerous reports of election
irregularities, primarily related to the tallying of votes.

Internship Description:
The Advocacy division of Human Rights Watch is seeking the assistance of a graduate student for the summer of 2008. The intern will work with Human Rights Watch’s Global Advocacy Director to conduct research and develop and implement projects aimed at strengthening the UN Human Rights Council. Possible efforts include: analysis of country statements and voting records; helping an NGO advocacy network develop strategies to address poor performance; and development of background papers regarding Human Rights Council for different audiences. The intern may also be engaged in HRW’s efforts relating to human rights protection work within the United Nations more generally, including addressing UN efforts to mainstream human rights and right-based approaches to development. The intern will also be asked to assist the advocacy department’s efforts through attending meetings and note-taking, as well as other administrative tasks.

Amnesty International is seeking two researchers to work on it’s Balkans Team. For both roles, you will need proven research experience, thorough knowledge of the Western Balkans, excellent understanding of human rights and sound political judgement.
You should also have experience of analysing complex political and social situations, conducting research interviews, and producing reports and other written material. The Strathclyde Conflict and Resolution (SCAR) group is hosting an interdisciplinary conference which will analyse the themes of conflict, terror and resolution at various levels: past-present; private-public; local-global. In doing so it aims to reach across disciplinary barriers by bringing together experts from the whole of the social sciences spectrum, including (but not limited to) politics, history, law, sociology and psychology. Such a holistic analysis of conflict and terror will provoke, stimulate and question contemporary thought, while advocating the need for joint efforts to address common challenges.

Now in its 8th year, the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights is open for nomination. Since its inception, this prestigious award has been given to 9 individuals and a Korean organization. In 2006 and 2007 saw co-winners receiving the award. Among the winners include Xanana Gusmao (Timor Leste), Daw Aung San Suu Kyii ( Burma), Wardah Hafidz ( Indonesia), Malalai Joya (Afghanistan ) and Irom Sharmila (India).
For 2008, the prize at stake is US$ 50,000.00 , a gold medal and a certificate. The winner will be invited to grace the 2008 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Award Night on 18 May 2008 , in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. This yearly award is sponsored by the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
