HRP Visiting Fellowship Positions

The Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School is currently accepting
applications for its 2008-2009 Visiting Fellows Program. Visiting Fellows at
the Human Rights Program spend from one semester to a full academic year
(preference is given for candidates who can commit to a full academic year) in
residence at the Law School. Visiting Fellows devote the majority of their
time to research and writing on a specific human rights topic. During this
time, they may also audit courses in human rights and related subjects.

The Human Rights Program provides 4-8 fellows annually with a shared office
space, access to computers, and use of the Harvard library system. The Human
Rights Program does not charge fellows for the space that it provides. As a
general matter, the Human Rights Program does not fund fellows or provide them
with living expenses. When a fellow cannot afford the come to the Human Rights
Program without additional aid, the Program will make every effort to make aid
available. The Human Rights Program’s funds are never sufficient to cover all
expenses, however. Visiting Fellows are encouraged to apply to other funding
sources, and the Human Rights Program will provide letters in support of
fellows’ applications for funding to foundations and other institutions.

Fluent spoken English is a requirement for being a Visiting Fellow. While the
Human Rights Program does not currently require a formal exam, it may request
proof of such fluency. Visiting Fellows at the Human Rights Program are
usually scholars with a substantial background in human rights, or experienced
activists. On occasion, they have included young committed workers in the field
with the capacity and interest to develop as teachers or activists. A number of
fellows have also come from the judiciary and other branches of government.

Application Requirements:

The following information and materials are required for an application:

* A detailed description of the proposed area of research and writing while
at the Program. The proposal should define the aims of the study and its
methods as clearly as possible.
* The duration of the stay and the expected sources of funding.
* Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant's
work.
* A sample of any writing on human rights (in English, Spanish, or French,
if there is any such writing).
* A resume or curriculum vitae, as well as a description of proposed work
and/or career after the fellowship.
* A statement to the effect that the applicant has fluent command of oral
English sufficient to participate actively from the time of arrival in
individual and group discussions.

Complete application materials should be submitted by December 7, 2007 to:
