On behalf of the Due Process of Law Foundation (DPLF), I am very pleased to invite you to a discussion on the challenges to improve judicial independence in Latin America, which is certainly a key mechanism for strengthening democracy in the region. The event will take place on Tuesday, November 13, and features a presentation by the Honorable Alejandro Toledo, former president of Peru. DPLF president Douglass Cassel will offer commentary, and Katya Salazar, DPLF programs director, will present the relevant work of DPLF’s Judicial Accountability and Transparency (JAT) program. The presentations will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

DPLF was founded in 1996 by Thomas Buergenthal, now a judge at the International Court of Justice, and his colleagues on the UN Truth Commission for El Salvador. DPLF is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Washington, D.C., that seeks to promote the reform and modernization of national justice systems in the Western Hemisphere to ensure that the rule of law becomes the hallmark of those systems. During 2007, the JAT program researched and published a number of studies on the importance of judicial independence for Latin American democracies.

I sincerely hope that you can join us.

Best regards,

Eduardo Bertoni

Executive Director, DPLF
