Kigali: Coordinator Project On Responses to Genocide in Rwanda

REDRESS and African Rights are initiating a fact-finding and advocacy initiative aimed at eliminating European safe havens for Rwandese genocide suspects and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice. We are currently seeking a Project Coordinator to coordinate the Rwanda side of this Project.


The Project Coordinator is responsible for:
i) Liaising with genocide survivors in Rwanda and the organisations, institutions and NGOs that are assisting them, Ministry of Justice officials and prosecutors;
ii) In collaboration with local actors, collating witness information and background evidence on specific events that relate to international investigations and prosecutions that the Project is emphasising. In particular, collate available evidence on known suspects residing abroad and liaising with Rwandese victims, associations, Rwandese prosecutors and other stakeholders;
iii) Enhance potential for eventual extraditions of genocide suspects to Rwanda by advocating and building the capacity for the Government to address fair trial concerns;
iv) Empower Rwandese survivors to seek legal redress and make their voices heard internationally.

Additional Qualifications:
Skills Specification:
· Qualified Jurist
· Experience of working on victims' issues in an international context.
· Knowledge of principles of international criminal law and universal jurisdiction in particular, as well as practical experience with domestic criminal justice system (preferably civil law)
· Experience in outreach and advocacy initiatives
· Sound experience in project management

Personal Requirements
· Capacity to deal with persons from a variety of backgrounds
· Maturity and sensitivity to deal with a complex and sensitive subject matter
· Ability to work as part of a team and to work indepndently
· Fluent in either French or English with strong written and oral skills in the other.
