The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) seeks a bilingual associate for our Washington, DC office. Established in 1991 by a group of prominent Latin American human rights defenders, CEJIL is a regional organization that works to promote human rights throughout the Hemisphere through the effective use of the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights, composed of the Inter-American Commission and Court, the human rights bodies of the Organization of American States (OAS). CEJIL’s mandate to effectively promote and protect the human rights of citizens throughout the region is carried out from three program areas: 1) Legal Defense Program, 2) Training and Dissemination Program, and 3) Strengthening the Inter-American System Program. Through these areas, CEJIL provides free legal advice and training on the use of international human rights instruments to victims of violations, their families, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government agencies, while working towards the full implementation of international human rights norms in the Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS). RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide administrative support for the attorneys in our Washington Office. Tasks will include:
• Writing reports and proposals
• Edit publications
• Systematizing and organizing information
• Drafting routine correspondence in Spanish and English
• Perform administrative functions such as, photocopying, sending faxes and filing
The associate will also:
• Making travel arrangements
• Other tasks may include: assisting in logistics for meetings, conferences and other events, as well as other relevant administrative duties, as assigned.
Additional Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be self-motivated and have the ability to work as part of a team. He/she will have excellent communication skills, will be able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and will work quickly and efficiently, with minimal supervision.
The candidate should possess:
• Bachelors or Masters in International Relations, Latin American Studies
• Minimum of a year experience in the administrative field
• Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish - Portuguese is a plus. (An outstanding capacity to write persuasively in English is especially important.)
• Excellent organizational skills
• Attention to detail
• Flexibility and focus to perform and prioritize several tasks on short notice within designated deadlines
• Ability to be collegial and team oriented, yet be able to work independently, quickly and well under pressure in a fast paced multi-cultural environment
• Understanding of human rights issues, particularly in Latin America
• Strong computer literacy, especially with the Microsoft Office Suite
• The ability to make a minimum commitment of two years
