U.Nottingham: Short Courses on Human Rights

The following are three short courses on human rights offered by the University of Nottingham.

1) Short Course on Human Rights Law - The University of Nottingham, Human Rights Law Centre.

This course is for three months and is run twice annually - September/October - December and January - March. The years course starts on 1st October.

The course provides an in-depth understanding of international human rights standards, looking at the human rights systems of organisations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OAS and the African Union. It provides a valuable insight for those working for NGOs or in government, as well as graduates, lecturers and legal or other professionals. The course features organised visits to NGOS, criminal courts and prisons.

The fee for three months is £2,950.

2) Short Course on The Law and Practice of Human Rights Field Operations - The University of Nottingham, Human Rights Law Centre.


This three month course aims to further students' understanding of the law and practice of human rights field work. The programme balances wide-ranging study with skills training for such activities as human rights monitoring, reporting, advocacy and capacity building. Close attention is paid to the modern realities of field work and participants take part in a number of visits to relevant NGO and government offices in London, with an option to visit a UN field operations.


This course will benefit potential and current staff of human rights field operations. Newcomers to the topic will gain a wide appreciation of the sector. The course will also be of assistance to headquarters staff in NGOs and intergovernmental organisations who support the work of field programmes, current and future humanitarian and development practitioners and for civilian, police and military peacekeepers.


This course will run from January to March. The fee for three months is £2,950. The optional field visit is subject to an additional charge to cover costs.

3) Annual Summer School on Human Rights Monitoring, Reporting to the Human Rights Treaty Bodies: Maximising the Roles of Governments, National Institutions and Civil Society - The University of Nottingham, Human Rights Law Centre, 25 June - 30 June 2007


The six day programme will focus on providing participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively participate in the reporting process. It will involve presentations by leading experts in the field accompanied by interactive group discussions, case studies and skills-development exercises.


The Summer School is designed to benefit current and potential staff of relevant government departments, national human rights institutions, national and international NGOS as well as UN officials and interested academics. However, the methods utilised in the conduct of the Summer School make it suitable for those with no prior experience in the field.


The fee for the Summer School is £600 for residential participants, with a reduction for non-residential participants. The fee covers costs of tuition, food and accommodation, and the provision of all course materials.
