NY: Program Associate


The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) assists countries pursuing accountability for past mass atrocity or human rights abuse. The Center works in societies emerging from repressive rule or armed conflict, as well as in established democracies where historical injustices or systemic abuse remain unresolved.

ICTJ seeks a Program Associate for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Unit in our New York Office. The Program Associate will provide support to the MENA Director and deputy directors in executing country programs and conducting thematic work. This involves country work, program coordination, internal organizational work, and limited country travel.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Country work:
• Assist Senior Associate with developing country programs; may take a lead role on a project; engage in limited travel to countries of engagement.
• Coordinate daily monitoring of news relevant to transitional justice developments in the MENA region through web searches, subscription to relevant websites and through the Arabic media. In many cases some of this monitoring can be delegated to interns but needs to be supervised.
• Perform research as requested and prepare reports or briefings; draft text for public documents.

2. Program Coordination:
• Recruit and retain overall management of MENA interns.
• Assist in organizing workshops, seminars and other meetings.
• Ensure ICTJ Arabic website is regularly updated, the biweekly Arabic newsletter is emailed on schedule and maintain general inbox (mena@ictj.org) by handling Arabic language inquiries.
• Assist with media outreach, including: identifying media opportunities to generate ICTJ coverage; maintaining MENA press lists and updating press information.
• Assist in maintaining contact with local partners’ organizations, embassies, and other relevant civil society actors or government officials as the need arises.

3. Organizational work:
• Assist in writing narrative reports on activities and text for the website and annual reports.
• Edit and format complex documents for publication; write such documents if it falls within policy area.
• Assist in writing funding proposals to donors as well as reports on feedback to donors.

4. Other:
• Participate in internal, organizational meetings (Retreat, staff meetings and country meetings.)


Additional Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in international relations, law, political science or similar discipline required. Specialization in human rights, transitional justice, and Middle East-North African region preferred.
• 2-3 years relevant work experience, preferably in human rights and/or international programs.
• Fluency in reading and writing Arabic essential; high level of proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills.
• Substantive academic or practical engagement in human rights or transitional justice issues, plus experience in MENA region.
• Strong time management and project management experience.
• Advanced knowledge of MS Office, excellent database skills.
• Ability to use academic research tools essential, familiarity with internet/website editing a plus.
• The ideal candidate would be open to possible relocation of position in the MENA region in the future.
