Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, and the first
and only Muslim woman to win this award, will speak at Loyola University in the Mundelein Center Auditorium (6525 N Sheridan Road, Chicago IL)
on Monday evening, 7:30pm, April 30, 2007. At this time she will also receive an honorary degree from the university.
Shirin Ebadi is an attorney and the former president of the city court
of Tehran. She now practices law and teaches at the University of Tehran. She is an advocate for a Reformed Islam, and, as the Nobel Prize citation notes, "argues for a new interpretation of Islamic law which is in harmony with vital human rights such as democracy, equality before the law, religious freedom, and freedom of speech." Ebadi is also a strong advocate for the rights of women, children and refugees.
Dr. Ebadi will speak on the topic "True Islam: Human Rights and the Role of Faith." The lecture is sponsored by the Ann Ida Gannon, BVM, Center for Women and Leadership and the Women's Studies Program of
Loyola University Chicago.
