The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) is an international human rights organisation working to protect and promote the human right to adequate housing. COHRE has regional programmes in Africa, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region, along with thematic programmes covering key issues including women and housing rights; the right to water; litigation; restitution; and forced evictions. Established in 1994, COHRE is an important voice in the global human rights movement, operating from six main offices around the world located in Africa, Australia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the US.
COHRE regards the housing rights of women as a fundamental aspect of the promotion of housing rights for everyone, everywhere. COHRE wishes to hire a Coordinator to manage its Women and Housing Rights Programme (WHRP). The WHRP Coordinator will be based in one of COHRE’s main offices, the exact location of which will be determined as part of the selection process.
The COHRE WHRP Coordinator will:
- Coordinate the development and implementation of WHRP’s Plan of Action
- Promote gender mainstreaming in all of COHRE’s activities
- Carry out research, fact-finding missions, legal advocacy, housing rights training and other COHRE activities related to women’s housing rights issues
- Network with other organizations on the issues of women’s housing rights
- Represent the WHRP at the United Nations and other international meetings
- Maintain regular contact with community-based groups, NGOs, governments and international organisations with which WHRP has close working relations
- Promote women’s housing and land rights broadly
- Coordinate programme fundraising, budget development and other financial matters
- Supervise COHRE staff/consultants in the WHRP
Required Skills/Background:
- Significant human rights experience and expertise, particularly in the area of women’s human rights
- Experience with housing rights, displacement or forced eviction issues
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure
- Good judgment and excellent strategic thinking and analytical skills
- Self-motivated and an excellent writer
- A proven manager, who enjoys helping colleagues perform to the best of their potential
- Willingness (sometimes on short notice) to travel often, occasionally for extended periods of time
- Fluency in English is essential (fluency in other languages would also be considered an asset)
- Legal or other advanced degree
