Expert Trainer & Country Director, Sierra Leone

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR)

One Expert Trainer will be hired to conduct journalism training activities (including workshops, preparing curriculum, lecturing and mentorship) across Sierra Leone (eight months, full-time in Sierra Leone plus preparation of materials before departure)

The expert will have significant journalism experience, a proven ability to successfully teach others and the ability to work in a challenging, cross-cultural environment. The expert will organize and run a workshop series focused on building the capacity of the Sierra Leonean media to report on human rights issues. While JHR’s Head Office and local Country Director will direct the expert in choosing the general topics for the training exercises, the experts will be expected to construct the training material prior to their departure. The expert will also be responsible for working with four other JHR trainers who will be based at specific media outlets in Freetown and Kenema.

Additional Qualifications:
--A strong university degree - a masters degree in journalism or human rights related field or equivalent experience
--Significant working experience as a journalist
--Significant training, teaching or educational experience
--Experience organizing and managing events
--Strong knowledge of Sierra Leone and West Africa
--Living or working experience in sub-Saharan Africa preferred
--Proven ability to live and work in a challenging environment
--Extremely self-motivated
--Ability to work as part of a team
--Ability to manage and motivate people
--Excellent interpersonal skills
--Fluency in English
--Fluency in a Sierra Leonean language is preferred

Country Director, Sierra Leone

JHR is currently seeking a Country Director to help establish and then run JHR's new office in Freetown, Sierra Leone. JHR will be working with local partners to build the capacity of local media organizations and journalists to report more effectively on human rights issues. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all of JHR's ground operations in Sierra Leone.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
--Developing and maintaining partnerships with a wide range of local media outlets, media organizations, post-secondary institutions, NGOs, and government officials
--Organizing and facilitating training seminars for journalists on human rights reporting in Sierra Leone
--Managing international volunteers
--Overseeing the establishment of a human rights reporting award
--Monitoring and evaluating JHR's work in Sierra Leone
--Budget management
--Managing JHR's office in Freetown


Additional Qualifications:
--Knowledge of and commitment to JHR's mission and mandate
--Significant experience living and/or working in Sierra Leone
--Significant project management experience, specifically projects supported by international funding bodies
--Strong knowledge of the media in Sierra Leone
--Strong knowledge of human rights issues in Sierra Leone
--Experience developing and maintaining partnerships
--Budget management skills
--Teaching and facilitation skills
--Ability to develop and implement monitoring and evaluation plans
--Strong written and spoken English
