Prospective members are also invited to attend as observers.
SYMPOSIUM: "HUMAN RIGHTS & ACADEMIC REPRESSION"
at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, California, USA
The symposium will explore intersections—existing and potential—between international human rights standards, strategies and methods and traditional understandings of academic freedom and institutional autonomy in the higher education sector. Recognizing historical and ongoing attacks on scholars and universities worldwide, the symposium is intended to explore ways in which developments over several decades in the human rights scholarship, advocacy and policy-making might be employed in responding to, mitigating or deterring such attacks.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "HUMAN RIGHTS & ACADEMIC REPRESSION"
The Scholars at Risk Network, Peace Review and the USF Journal of Law & Social Challenges seek submissions on the theme of "HUMAN RIGHTS & ACADEMIC REPRESSION." Submissions will be considered for publication and/or presentation at a symposium on the same theme on April 14, 2007 in San Francisco, California, USA.
Proposals exploring the widest range of topics relating to the theme are invited, in particular those exploring the application of human rights practices and strategies to situations involving the most severe threats to academic freedom—such as threats to life or liberty experienced in repressive, conflict and post-conflict societies. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
--Legal/human rights standards, techniques & strategies as related to academic freedom
--Identification/measurement of threats to academic freedom & institutional autonomy
--Impact of political, economic & social factors on academic freedom and human rights
--Historical or regional perspectives on academic freedom and institutional autonomy
