Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is an international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in changing the human rights-related policies of influential governments and international institutions.

HRW, the largest U.S.-based international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization, seeks a Los Angeles-based representative to head its development and outreach efforts in Southern California. For more than 15 years, the California Committee – South has supported Human Rights Watch through fundraising, education and advocacy initiatives in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The California Committee – South is the oldest and largest of the 12 Committees in the HRW Council, which is active in Europe, Canada and the United States.

Description: This LA-based Development & Outreach director will be responsible for leading fundraising efforts, building HRW’s local constituency and managing select advocacy initiatives, both independently and through the California Committee – South network. The director’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• identifying, cultivating, servicing and soliciting individual donors, prospects and California Committee – South members;
• acting as a liaison and resource to HRW board members living in Southern California;
• overseeing the production of special fundraising and cultivation events in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, including the Annual Dinners;
• leading select advocacy initiatives and overseeing the volunteer Women’s Rights Committee and Young Advocates;
• developing local foundation prospects and servicing corporate donors;
• managing the Los Angeles office staff;
• traveling to Santa Barbara and to our other offices, including New York and San Francisco, as needed; and
• assisting with the cultivation and servicing of selected major donors in the Southwestern U.S.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must have at least eight years of fundraising experience, with emphasis on the creation and management of major gifts programs, and must possess strong oral and written communications skills. Experience with overseeing large fundraising events and managing a variety of volunteers is also desired. The applicant must be a disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team. The candidate must have demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and must have the capacity to master and represent the mission and program of HRW.
