DC: WOLA Communications Director

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) is seeking a Communications Director to develop and facilitate the organization’s communications strategy. The Communications Director will work with senior staff on messaging for the organization and for advocacy campaigns. This person will coordinate all major WOLA publications, website content and media outreach. The Communications Director will report directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities Include:
• Design and implement a communications strategy for the organization;
• Create strategic messages for advocacy campaigns and major publications;
• Promote the organization by developing communications to reach new sectors and raise the organization’s profile;
• Oversee and edit all major publications;
• Coordinate organization’s publications schedule and distribution;
• Coordinate media work by developing and maintaining relationships with press and other media outlets both in the United States and in Latin America;
• Manage the web site and oversee content control;
• Work with the Executive Director and senior staff to prepare annual plan/general support proposal;
• Carry out other institutional responsibilities as determined by the Executive Director; and
• Participate in fundraising efforts as determined by Executive Director.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate is:
• An excellent communicator and strategist, with a history of creating successful communications campaigns, building and maintaining relationships, and working with media;
• Experienced in developing marketing strategy and managing public relations for a non-profit organization;
• An excellent and fast editor;
• Deadline oriented;
• Flexible and motivated;
• Experienced in working in and with Latin America; and
• Knowledgeable about human rights issues or non-profit experience preferred.

Requirements
• 8 years minimum experience in a relevant field;
• Bachelor’s degree
• Spanish fluency in both reading and writing, knowledge of Portuguese a plus; and
• Knowledge of Outlook database and Microsoft Office.
