NYC: Research Associate, Africa Program

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)--an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the defense of press freedom around the world--is seeking a Research Associate for the Africa program to work in our New York office.

One to three years of professional experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of press freedom and human rights issues in sub-Saharan Africa, strong writing and reporting skills, and the ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a small team. Strong oral and written communication skills in English and French are essential.

Primary responsibilities include: conducting daily research on English and French language news Web sites, conducting telephone interviews with African journalists and press freedom advocates in the two languages, preparing alerts, protest letters and case summaries on press freedom violations, and working with the Africa Program Coordinator on regional advocacy efforts.

In addition, the researcher will have the opportunity to write articles for CPJ's website and bi-annual press freedom magazine Dangerous Assignments.
