Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is an international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in changing the human rights-related policies of influential governments and international institutions.
Description: The researcher will be based in either São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, monitoring and researching human rights developments in Brazil; conducting fact-finding investigations throughout the country into current and past human rights abuses; writing and editing reports, press releases, op-eds, articles, letters and position papers, as well as submissions to international bodies; crafting and implementing local and international advocacy strategies for improving respect for human rights in Brazil, which will be directed at the country's governmental bodies, as well as intergovernmental organizations and international institutions such as the U.N. and the Organization of American States; responding promptly to queries from the press, the public, and colleagues in the human rights community; and working closely with regional human rights organizations to ensure that the work of HRW in Brazil complements and enhances their own work.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an advanced degree either in law, international relations, journalism, or a related field, as well as experience in human rights work. Candidates should be fluent in both English and Portuguese and have a background in the region. The ideal applicant will be a creative, self-motivated strategic thinker with excellent oral and written communication skills, proven initiative, the ability to work quickly and well under pressure, and a commitment to international human rights.
