The Carr Center has a limited number of openings for internships in Fall 2006 (early-September to mid-December). Decisions are made on a rolling basis, and we encourage applicants to apply as soon as possible. Internships are a great way to learn more about human rights issues and careers and to get involved with the Center. Our internships are open to all, but are designed for undergraduates and recent graduates. A minimum commitment of 20 hours per week on a regular schedule is required, and we encourage full-time commitments of up to 35 hours per week. Please read below for details.
The internship program at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy is an opportunity to become familiar with many of the issues and debates of the human rights discourse, to work on projects run by some of the leading scholars and practitioners in the human rights field, and to engage in policy-oriented research at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
The Carr Center critically examines the policies and actions of governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other actors that affect the realization of human rights around the world. Led by Director Sarah Sewall, the Center sponsors a fellows program, a human rights policy speaker series, and research and working groups on the decision to intervene, the use of military force, UN reform, and the opportunities and challenges human rights NGOs face in the contemporary world, among other topics.
Internship Description:
The Carr Center internship program seeks to engage interns in a variety of tasks associated with the Center. The interns will:
• become familiar with issues relevant to human rights and the Carr Center's unique mandate
• conduct research on new and ongoing program initiatives
• help plan and organize special events and colloquia
• assist professors, fellows, and staff with some administrative duties
Interns are also encouraged to take advantage of the wide variety of events that the Kennedy School, and Harvard more broadly, have to offer.
Skills Needed:
Above all, potential interns should show a strong interest in human rights and an eagerness to learn more about international affairs. Interns should be adept at internet and library research and have strong writing skills. They should be self-motivated, flexible, and reliable. Prior research experience is preferred. Punctuality, attention to detail, and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks are expected.
