DC: Journalist/Communications Associate

The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), an international human rights organization focusing primarily in Latin America, seeks a Communications Associate for its office in Washington, D.C.

CEJIL was established in 1991 as a consortium of ten human rights organizations from North, South, and Central America and the Caribbean. CEJIL conducts international human rights litigation and provides free legal advice in the use of international human rights instruments to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Americas. CEJIL is the first human rights organization to offer an integrated program of full-time litigation, free legal services and monitoring of the Inter-American human rights system. CEJIL maintains offices in Washington, D.C., Costa Rica, Brazil, and Argentina.

CEJIL is looking for a communications associate or a journalist who will work closely with the CEJIL/Washington staff. His/her responsibilities will be to:

- Support the overall communications strategy of the institution including writing press releases and op-eds, answering media calls and interview requests, maintaining and updating media contacts
- Coordinate the publication of a bi-annual journal. Activities include writing and editing tasks, production of content and ensuring the distribution of the journal.
- Assist with the issuing of institutional materials in coordination with other staff members in our regional programs and write institutional material designed to communicate activities or institutional positions.
- Support and feed our tri-lingual web site (English, Spanish, Portuguese)


Additional Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, organized, responsible, detail-oriented, and have the ability to work as part of a team. He/She must be a problem solver, able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously to meet strict deadlines, as well as work quickly and efficiently. The candidate should possess:

- Excellent oral and written Spanish skills (if not native, the candidate should have abilities equal to a native Spanish speaker). Advanced skills in both written and oral English. (Portuguese is a plus)
- Outstanding verbal communication, writing and editing skills
- Strong computer literacy (including Windows, MSWord, HTML, databases, Internet, WordPerfect 6.1). Experience with networks and/or software is a plus.
- Experience with web site maintenance is desirable
- Knowledge of Latin America and international human rights. Prior experience with NGOs is desirable.

This is a part time position. The salary is commensurate with experience. This position may require some international travel. Candidates are expected to begin working in August or early September.
