Assistant to Associate Director [WLOU-07]
The American Civil Liberties Union, a national not-for-profit public interest organization, invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant to the Associate Director/Chief Legislative Counsel to work in the organization’s Washington Legislative Office. The ACLU Washington Legislative Office is responsible for advancing the civil liberties agenda of the national organization before Congress and the Executive Branch.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Assistant will work under supervision of the Associate Director/Chief Legislative Counsel, with ACLU lobbyists and policy counsels.
Specific responsibilities Include:
· Research legislation and executive branch action using Congressional databases and other tools to for use in special projects, presentations and lobby visits;
· Maintain calendars and arrange meetings;
· Maintain databases and file systems for Associate Director/Chief Legislative Counsel;
· Assist with general office administration and administrative support such as keeping minutes of internal meetings and other routine matters such as photocopying, mailings and travel arrangements;
· Produce and edit correspondence and memoranda, internal reports of lobbying activity and internal reports of legislative developments;
· Respond, if appropriate, to telephone calls for Associate Director/Chief Legislative Counsel;
· Plan and support meetings and events in and outside office;
· Screen requests for ACLU Washington Legislative Office speakers at events;
· Support and coordinate contractual arrangements with lobbying firms and high profile contractors who make public appearances for the ACLU;
· Convey legislative documents, attend coalition meetings, press conferences and Congressional hearings as needed;
· Coordinate and facilitate pro bono outreach;
· Perform other tasks as assigned by Associate Director/Chief Legislative Counsel, Office Administrator or Washington Legislative Office Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelors Degree and minimum two years’ administrative work experience;
· Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail;
· Strong interpersonal skills;
· Superior oral and written communication skills;
· Proficiency with MS Office and demonstrated ability to conduct computer research required; additional computer skills desirable;
· Ability to work well and quickly under pressure, ability to meet deadlines (may require occasional evening work);
· Must be self-starter who can take initiative, work independently with little supervision, identify and solve problems;
· Interest in civil liberties and some knowledge of legislative process is helpful.
