Director of Government Affairs
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is seeking a Director of Government Affairs. This motivated individual will be responsible for representing the USCIRF by seeking out opportunities and developing strategies to share policy recommendations with the Administration and Congress for the purpose of promoting international religious freedom; educating policy makers on how the issue of religious freedom intersects with other strategic foreign policy initiatives; building relationships with Members of Congress, congressional staff, and officials in the Administration; seeking out opportunities to testify before Congress and brief policy officials through various other venues; assisting in the preparation and presentation of the USCIRF’s annual budget request; and conducting other government affairs related work such as tracking legislation, monitoring the activities of Congress and the Administration, and managing the daily operations of a small government affairs staff.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of work experience in foreign policy, religious freedom and related human rights and be familiar with the appropriations process. That person should also possess strong strategic and analytical skills, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work well in a fast-paced, multitasking environment. Experience in managing staff a plus.
The USCIRF, which is a bipartisan Commission, is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1998 to monitor religious freedom throughout the globe and to make recommendations to the President, Secretary of State, and Congress as to how the U.S. Government can best promote it. Policy Analyst
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is seeking a policy analyst with substantial experience in U.S. foreign policy, international human rights and/or religious freedom.
Responsibilities include monitoring developments in U.S. foreign policy and conditions of religious freedom around the globe; researching and drafting reports analyzing conditions of religious freedom and the successes and failures of U.S. policy with regard to promoting respect for human rights, including religious freedom; and developing policy recommendations for the U.S. government to promote religious freedom abroad and monitoring the implementation of those recommendations.
Substantial regional expertise (e.g., the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia) and language ability desirable. Competitive salary and full benefits. Assistant Communications Director
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is seeking an Assistant Communications Director to work with the Communications Director in developing and implementing a communications strategy for the Commission. The Assistant Director would work with Commissioners and staff in disseminating information to national and international media, reaching out to reporters and commentators to place the Commission’s issues and work in the news. This would include drafting press releases and opinion pieces, setting up interviews and speaking engagements for Commissioners and staff, and arranging logistics for press conferences and other public events. In addition, the Assistant Director would work with the Director and Commission staff in writing and editing the Commission’s Policy Briefs, Congressionally-mandated Annual Report, and newsletter. The Assistant Director would also manage the Commission’s web site and supervise interns in producing daily press clips and building the database. This position requires extremely strong written and verbal communications skills, high attention to detail, and excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
