Associate/Sr. Associate for Security Policy (Police and Military Issues)
The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) seeks an Associate or Senior Associate to work on security issues. The Associate/Senior Associate will monitor, evaluate and carry out public education and advocacy efforts on US military and policing programs with Latin America and on general security issues in the region with particular attention to expanding military roles.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1. Research, education and advocacy on US military and police programs with Latin America
2. Work with colleague organizations in Latin America on regional security issues. Coordinating strategy, education and advocacy around regional security meetings of the OAS, defense ministries and the Southern Command.
3. Research and updating of the Just the Facts web site, an extensive database on US military programs with Latin America.
4. Interact with Southcom and the Departments of State, Defense and Justice on police and security issues.
5. Prepare briefs, memos, and articles for WOLA publications, and other written materials on police and military issues.
6. Design and coordinate WOLA’s press work on these issues, including writing and production of press materials, editorial mailings and interviews with media outlets.
7. Represent WOLA in public forums and organize events, conferences, seminars and other meetings as appropriate.
8. Supervise a program assistant and one intern per semester.
9. Coordinate visits to Washington of colleagues from Latin America. Develop and carry out joint advocacy campaigns with regional counterparts.
10. Prepare planning documents; participate in WOLA’s planning process, and carry out other institutional responsibilities as determined by the Executive Director and the Deputy Director.
11. Participate in fundraising efforts as determined by Executive Director and the Deputy Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Strong analytical and writing skills required.
2. Background in security issues.
3. A demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice in Latin America.
4. Experience in political advocacy and U.S. foreign policy processes.
5. Experience working or living in a Latin American country strongly desired.
6. Individual must be fluent in English and Spanish.
7. Master’s degree preferred.
SALARY: Negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
