UK - Responsibility to the Story: Testimony and Ethics in Human Rights

Human Rights Practice. It is hosted by the Centre for Applied Human Rights,
University of York (UK), and Oxford University Press, in collaboration with Amnesty

OAK - Nisgua seeks director

The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) links people in the U.S. and Guatemala with a focus on their common struggles for justice, human rights, environmental protection, and dignity. Formed at the height of Guatemala's war in 1981, NISGUA's network today is comprised of thousands of people across the U.S. who demand justice for genocidal crimes of the past, push to change current U.S. policies, support communities challenging corporate-led development in Guatemala, and advocate for grassroots alternatives.

22nd Francophone Course on International Humanitarian Law

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss Red Cross are co-organising the 22e Cours francophone de droit international humanitaire from 31 August to 9 September 2009, in Sion, Switzerland. Through lectures and case studies, participants will acquire a solid understanding of the law regulating armed conflicts.

The course in open to European- and North American-based graduate students and lecturers with knowledge of public international law, as well as to professionals dealing with IHL-related situations in their work.

Brussels: Universal Jurisdiction Project Coordinator


The Project Coordinator is responsible for the general implementation of a joint REDRESS FIDH project on universal jurisdiction funded by the European Union. The purpose of the project is to:

• Enhance cooperation among Member States in the investigation and prosecution of
perpetrators located in the EU.
• Develop among practitioners regular exchanges of views on common problems faced in
their countries in the investigation and prosecution of genocide, crimes against
humanity, war crimes and torture.
• Strengthen victims' protection and access to justice in the EU in relation to the
investigation and prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and
torture by exploring the challenges faced by such victims in the pursuit of remedies.
• Support EU-level initiatives and directives aimed at extending mutual cooperation and
bringing greater consistency to the practices of Member States.

June 19, 2009: March for Human Rights and Democracy in Eritrea
‘Enough is Enough: Stand for Change in Eritrea’

WASHINGTON, DC- On June 19 people from around the county will be converging on Washington, DC to march for human rights and democracy in Eritrea. Eritrean Global Solidarity and the Eritrean Democratic Alliance are calling for the march, part of a weekend of events that also includes a symposium, candlelight vigil, and discussions with the U.S. State Department.

The weekend of events aims to raise awareness about the ongoing human rights abuses in Eritrea and the growing refugee crisis. According to a report issued by Human Rights Watch, “Eritrea's extensive detention and torture of its citizens and its policy of prolonged military conscription are creating a human rights crisis and prompting increasing numbers of Eritreans to flee the country.”

Belfast: Conference on Amnesties, Immunities & Prosecutions

AMNESTIES, IMMUNITIES AND PROSECUTIONS:
INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON INCENTIVISING TRUTH RECOVERY

We are very pleased to announce an international conference to take place in Belfast in June
2009, Beyond Legalism: Amnesties, Transition and Conflict Transformation. The conference
is the culmination of ongoing research in the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast on
the theme of the role of amnesties in conflict transformation, involving extensive fieldwork in
Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, South Africa, Uganda and Uruguay during 2008. This
conference will look in particular at the ways in which ex-combatants, former members of the
security forces and others can be incentivised to engage in truth recovery processes.

DC: Moot Court Competition Coordinator


The Academy is seeking a Program Coordinator for the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The Competition is the only trilingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese) moot court competition dedicated to the Inter-American human rights legal system in the world. It brings together over 350 students and faculty, and over 200 practicing attorneys, as well as key members of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, as well as the diplomatic corps, to train law students on how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system as a legitimate forum for redressing human rights violations. The Program Coordinator will work with universities throughout the Americas and beyond, including coordination of agreements, and will have extensive contact with law students and lawyers from the region.

Geneva: HRW manager

Reporting to the Director of Development & Outreach in Geneva, the Manager will be responsible for supporting HRW's fundraising, advocacy, and outreach efforts in Geneva and Zurich. The Manager's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: liaising with, servicing and cultivating Committee members and prospects; supporting the Director in soliciting major gifts and general support funds; researching, identifying, and cultivating new prospects; coordinating and providing support for events in Geneva and Zurich, including Committee meetings, researcher briefings and the HRW Annual Dinner in Geneva; creating agendas, preparing background materials, drafting minutes and conducting follow-up to meetings; responding to requests for information and corresponding with Geneva and Zurich Committee members; providing membership support services for Geneva and Zurich, including mailings, gift tracking, gift processing and acknowledgments, using HRW's Raiser's Edge database; creating and tracking donor lists, fundraising, and expenses for both cities; advertising, recruiting, training and coordinating the work of interns for the Geneva Development department; and other tasks as assigned.

HRW Mexico Researcher

Human Rights Watch is seeking a Researcher on Mexico who will be based either in New York or Washington, DC. The researcher should be prepared to spend substantial periods of time traveling to Mexico. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: monitoring and documenting human rights abuses by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including governments, local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, security forces and others in the field; carrying out research in the region; writing reports, briefing memos, short reports, statements, op-eds, articles, and press releases, as well as submissions to international bodies, on human rights concerns in the region as needed in a concise and accurate manner, in tight timeframes; responding promptly to queries from the press, public, and colleagues in the human rights community; helping to design and implement local and international advocacy strategies to improve respect for human rights in Mexico, by publicizing research findings, briefing government and U.N. officials, and working with local NGOs and human rights activists; working closely with regional human rights organizations to ensure that the work of HRW in Mexico complements and enhances their own work; and developing recommendations to stop or prevent abuses.
