NY: Communications Intern - Fall 2010

The Communications department of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is currently seeking interns to work for 15 to 20 hours a week during fall academic semester with a possible extension. The position is unpaid but will reimburse Metrocard fare to and from the internship. This is an excellent opportunity for people interested in advancing social justice by working in a fast-paced, progressive legal advocacy organization. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS : THE 2011 MARTIN ENNALS AWARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS (MEA)

The Martin Ennals Foundation invites nominations for its 2011 Award. The deadline is 9th December 2010. The MEA application form and more information on the Award can be obtained from the MEA website: www.martinennalsaward.org, ready for electronic submission

The Award is granted annually to an individual, or exceptionally an organisation, in recognition of their commitment and ongoing endeavour in the defence and promotion of human rights. Nominees must be currently involved in work for the promotion and protection of human rights. Special account is taken of those who are at risk and have demonstrated an active record of combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means. The MEA aims to encourage individuals or organisations, particularly those who are working in conditions hostile to fundamental human rights and who are in need of protection.

The present value of the annual Award is 20'000 Swiss Francs, to be used for further work in the field of human rights. The following organisations participate in the Jury: Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Front Line, Human Rights First, International Federation for Human Rights, the World Organisation Against Torture, International Commission of Jurists, International Service for Human Rights, Diakonie Germany and HURIDOCS.

Martin Ennals (1927-1991) was instrumental to the modern human rights movement. He creatively pursued ideas ahead of his time and was the driving force behind other organisations. His deep desire was to see more cooperation among NGOs.

Call for Nominations: Human Rights Defenders Tulip Award 2010

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Human Rights Defenders Tulip award. Established in 2008, the Human Rights Defenders Tulip is an initiative of the Dutch government. It is an award whose purpose is to recognize individuals who have shown exceptional moral courage in protecting and promoting the rights of their fellow human beings. The winner receives an individual cash award of EUR 10,000 and the opportunity to submit a project proposal to intensify his or her human rights work up to a value of EUR 100,000. In addition, the winner is given the opportunity to meet with relevant stakeholders in Europe. Deadline for nominations: June 15, 2010.

Nablus: UNESCO Human Rights Lawyer

The UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy and Peace was established at An-Najah National University in 1997. The UNESCO Chair is part of An-Najah National University and is not a part of the UNESCO organization. Its title allows the Chair to be a part of the twinning network established by UNESCO as a way to facilitate interaction between global research institutions. Since its inception the Chair has engaged in many activities including conducting research on specific human rights issues through literature study and qualitative and quantitative data collection, which supports the publishing of reports and papers used for conferences and advocacy purposes.

NY: HRW Africa Associate

The Associate will provide administrative and clerical assistance including, but not limited to, maintaining extensive files, contact lists and databases; maintaining communication among HRW's domestic and international offices and providing substantive, logistical and administrative assistance to field offices; retrieving and responding to requests for information; preparing, formatting and distributing documents such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op eds, publications and web content; assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires and translations; preparing for and taking minutes at meetings; assisting with advisory committee matters; assisting with special events, hiring and training; drafting and editing correspondence and other documents; assisting with travel arrangements and follow-up; recruiting and coordinating interns; recording departmental finances; word processing; photocopying; filing; faxing; answering phones; processing incoming mail; and other assigned tasks. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will take up this position in August 2010.

Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is seeking a highly-qualified, senior-level professional to head its Africa Division.

Description: The Executive Director of Human Rights Watch’s Africa Division is responsible for developing effective research, advocacy and communications strategies for maximum impact on human rights in sub-Saharan Africa. S/he is responsible for setting priorities and responding to emergencies. S/he oversees detailed research on human rights issues in sub-Saharan Africa, the publication of analytical and credible reports and other advocacy materials on those issues, and the use of these materials to generate domestic and international pressure to curb human rights violations. S/he represents the organization frequently before the international media and advocates with high-level officials from governments, UN, AU and other international and regional organizations. S/he coordinates with key colleagues, both within HRW and externally with allied organizations and NGOs. S/he manages staff based in three continents, including offices in Nairobi and Johannesburg, supporting staff and office development and overseeing their security. The Africa Executive Director is also responsible for fundraising, identifying and recruiting donors, and drafting funding proposals. S/he has overall responsibility for projecting Human Rights Watch’s wider international concerns on the continent. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership skills and a depth and breadth of management and organizational skills, including the demonstrated ability to lead a team of talented professionals in multiple global locations. S/he will preferably be based in the organization's New York City headquarters or an office in Africa, but other locations may be considered. Frequent international travel required.

THE PROCEDURE AND JURISPRUDENCE OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Strasbourg, 8-9 June 2010

This seminar aims to prepare the parties to a potential case before the Strasbourg Court on the practical aspects of its procedure.

The following questions will be addressed:

What are the admissibility criteria that have to be complied with?

In particular: what national remedies must be sought before submitting an application to the Court in Strasbourg?

What documents have to be submitted?

What is the objective of the written and the oral parts of the proceedings?

Participants without any prior knowledge will have the possibility to prepare themselves using an e-learning module.

Registrations reaching ERA before 8 May 2010 will be eligible for a 10% discount.

York (UK): 2 Tuition Scholarships for New LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice

The Centre for Applied Human Rights and York Law School are offering two tuition scholarships for full-time study in their new LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice for 2010-11.

The scholarships will cover fees at the rate for UK/EU students. The deadline is 30 April 2010. Applicants must have already been offered a place on the LLM.

The new LLM is distinctive because students work on real human rights issues through a compulsory law clinic, which gives practical skills, hands-on experience and improved job prospects; get the opportunity to work alongside human rights defenders during a two-week field visit to Malaysia; learn from international human rights defenders based at the Centre; and
explore how international human rights law interacts with national public policy in various states.
