Chega!

The Truth Commission for East Timor has issued its final report titled Chega! - “no more, stop, enough!”. The 2000 page report covers "25 years of protracted conflict during which numerous violations of human rights were committed." During that period, an estimated 18,600 people were victims of unlawful killings and forced disappearances. In addition, the Commission’s statement-taking process identified 17,169 victims of arbitrary detention, 8,508 victims of torture and 6,872 victims of ill-treatment. Other human rights violations included political imprisonment, sexual violence including rape and sexual slavery, forced displacement and famine.

The report, which includes violations both by the Indonesian forces and the Falintil "is based primarily on testimony from victims and is intended to contribute to healing through the restoration of their dignity."

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) has posted the report online, in PDF format, at http://www.ictj.org/cavr.report.asp
