Politicians arrested in Burundi

Burundian authorities have arrested 8 former politicians and a former dissident leader. They claim they have evidence that the men planned to kill President Pierre Nkurunziza in June with military support. Those arrested include Poppon Mudugu, an ethnic Tutsi activist who was also wanted for being implicated in this attempt to destabilise government institutions. Former vice-president Alphonse Marie Kadege, Deo Niyonzima, the leader of a small ethnic Tutsi party, an army colonel and an ex-leader of a rebel faction were also arrested.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Burundi has voiced alarm at the arrests and at allegations of torture. They called on the Government to make available any information about the events to the international community.
